  4.     Taking a cruise was James Michener's idea of nothing, until
  5. fieldwork on his new book changed his mind. Caribbean, a 672 pager
  6. that sweeps across the islands like a sea wind, is to be his last
  7. epic because the 82-year-old author doesn't "have the energy for
  8. the endless exploration and heavy research." Off on another cruise
  9. last week, he readied a lecture to fellow passengers on the
  10. islands' best sights. A favorite stop: Grenada, with its harbor
  11. "like a Vermeer painting." Michener claims to be "the only person
  12. confirmed never to have attended a ship's midnight buffet." He's
  13. too sleepy.
